Consumption Tax Reduction: No Means to Find Funding
The 51st House of Representatives election has seen an unusual development, with most ruling and opposition parties proposing reductions or abolitions of the consumption tax. Professor Mitsuki Sato of Hitotsubashi University points out that the effectiveness of such tax reductions as a measure against rising prices is ‘almost nonexistent.’ He also states that there is no means to find the necessary funding, estimated to be between 5 trillion and 31 trillion yen.
